Lacey’s Story

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Please help us to find Lacey the loving home that she deserves. You will never meet a more beautiful dog – she is simply stunning, an angel both in looks and personality.

Her story is surely a sad one, but she can’t tell us what happened to her. We do know that she was found wandering the streets and was sent to a shelter – where she had an expiration date stamped on her life.

We can tell by the scars on her face that she’s had to defend herself a time or two. We know from living with her that she probably was only kept outside and that no one took the time to teach her even basic commands or how to walk on a leash. We know that innately she knows to be gentle with children and to be a good protector. We also know that she is probably part Yellow Lab and part Great Dane; she weighs 65 lbs, is fully grown and is about a year old.

Lacey - before

On October 18th a picture of this sad and lonely looking girl made its way around the internet. One look at her picture conveyed every emotion she must have been feeling – sadness, despair, resignation and fear. Within a few hours of her picture being posted there were pleas from across the country begging to save her. Because she was found as a stray she could not be adopted outright, she needed to be saved by a Rescue organization.

Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving these animals from death, rescued her and they are sponsoring her. First and foremost they told her she was safe and showed her that she deserved to be loved. They gave her a bath, made sure she was up to date on all of her shots and made arrangements to have her spayed. Imagine how lucky I felt when an Angel called and asked if I could foster Lacey!!

Group nap time

She came into our lives the day after she way spayed. She was sad, lonely, confused, scared and was probably in a good amount of pain. She had absolutely no self confidence. It was quite sad. On a good day, with 2 kids and 3 dogs and many visitors, our house is overwhelming and it seemed like it might just be too much for her. We set her up in a crate where everyone could have a chance to smell her and get to know her and she could get whiffs of everyone. Thankfully all of our animals are friendly, and can’t wait for someone new to play with, and she could sense that. That was the one and only day she has ever used the crate.

With some trepidation she left the safety of her crate and ventured out to meet everyone. Charlie, the cranky patriarch of the canine family here, took one look at her and fell in love! It took every ounce of their self control but Louie and Mollie managed to contain themselves for at least a little while and not overwhelm her too much. They gently initiated her into their play and she tentatively accepted their invitation. It melted my heart to see her lying on her back, to show these two smaller dogs that she wouldn’t hurt them.

Everyone SIT!

Since that day they have become fast friends and it’s most often like a ball of fur with 6 or 8 sets of legs that whirls past me. In and out the back door, occasionally stopping at a food or water bowl – all of them at once, and then they are on their way again to find a stick or toy that they can share. It’s been heartwarming to watch Lacey learn how to be a dog and to have fun. Clearly, she had not experienced this before.

She is trying her very best to be the best dog she can be so that she can find her forever home. In one quick week she learned to sit, is working on stay and is learning to walk on a leash. She is fully housebroken and is as gentle as a lamb.

LaceyShe seems to be afraid of more aggressive dogs and my guess would be that might be the cause of some of her scars. She sometimes confuses rough play with aggression so we’ve had to be careful around some other dogs. I’ve been asked if I thought she should be in a home as an only dog. After spending time with her I think she just wants to be loved and acknowledged so she would be fine as an only dog. I also think she would be all right in a home with another dog – but only one that is smaller than her and/or not territorial or aggressive. As you can see from her pictures she gets along with our brood fine but no one has ever challenged her. They do, however, use her back to stand on and she doesn’t seem to mind that too much either.

Please share, cross post and try to help us find Lacey the home that she deserves. The family that gets this beautiful girl will have nothing but a lifetime of love and loyalty.

Buddy’s Story

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

BuddyHi! My name is Buddy. I am a black lab/retriever mix and the vet thinks I am about 7 months old now. When you look at me, you might see the scars down my spine. About 4 months ago, someone poured acid or gasoline or something like that down my back. A little got on my head, too. You would think that I would hate people and be very distrustful. Well, I am quite resilient! I love people! I love other dogs! I play really well with cats, too! I am the most loving dog you will ever meet!

BuddyLuckily, someone from Angels Among Us Pet Rescue heard about me and my nasty bloody, painful burns. No one wanted me because I was ugly and going to be a burden financially and physically. I did not have too much going for me at the shelter. I was burned, and not so pretty, and I am black. Black dogs are more common and get put to sleep first, so I was due to be put to sleep.

But right before my doom, a lady with Angels Among Us found a loving foster for me, and here I am alive because of her. She is my hero. I have been living with 2 other rescue dogs, and 2 rescue cats. It totally rocks, but I want a family of my own. I am going to miss her nieces too. They love me so much, and I thank them for teaching me what love is. They believed in me, and I knew when I was rescued from that stinky place that I had to prove why I was worthy of that love.

BuddyIn addition to my burns, I have been to the vet and had lots of things done: had a physical; been de-wormed twice because I tested positive for whipworms; had bordatella, so I got the vaccine up my nose and am now clear of that little bug; had an upper respiratory infection and got that cleared up with antibiotics; been neutered; had the DHPP and rabies vaccines; and gotten my toenails clipped. I am currently on Interceptor both as a heartworm preventative and to make sure my whipworms don’t come back. I used to walk funny on my feet because of my really bad case of malnutrition. Since going to my foster home, I have gained 15 pounds. My foster mom can no longer count my ribs like she could 5 weeks ago.

The vet did not think the fur on my spine would ever come back. As you can see from the before and after pictures, I am trying my best to prove them wrong! Quite a difference, don’t you think?!

I am truly one of the most loving, affectionate dogs you will ever meet! Please consider donating to Angels Among Us and help cover my vet bills for dogs like me. It has taken over $500 to get me lookin’ this good! And I do look good, don’t I?

Here’s an essay that my foster mom’s niece wrote about beauty in her school, and guess who the star is…yep, me! Buddy the beautiful.

Beauty is…
Beauty is from within everyone. ~Every creature on this Earth has Beauty. ~No matter what anyone looks like on the outside you can find the blossoming beauty if you look inside.
My aunt just got a new dog. ~Many just call him ugly or gross because stretching across his spine is a deep burn against his coarse midnight black fur. ~Someone poured acid or gasoline on this innocent six month old puppy. ~His black coat feels dirty and uncared for and all of his ribs jut out sharply from his body. ~The sweet boy doesn’t have a name yet because we are waiting for something special that shows his true beauty despite the horrible things that have been done to him.
An animal shelter down in Henry County somehow acquired him and was planning on destroying him. ~A kind lady heard about him and went to pick him up. ~She sent out an email that was passed around asking for help and maybe someone to foster or adopt him. ~My aunt saw the email and called about fostering him. ~She took him to the vet and learned that he had worms. ~I met him the next day. ~You would expect a puppy like this to be shy and fearful of humans, but he’ll prove you wrong. ~He jumps around my aunt’s two other dogs even though he often gets growled at. ~His soft brown eyes beg to be loved and say look at me! ~The pup always has a jump in his step even though because of undernourishment he slaps his paws down when he walks. ~He learns as fast as lightning and when he rests his head in your lap you can’t help but cuddle him. ~When another dog barked at him through the fence, he didn’t race away tail tucked in between his legs. ~Instead he woofed a louder bark than would be thought possible from the mass of skin and bones.
This puppy cannot be a show dog. ~He will never win a ribbon for prettiest coat or most gorgeous dog. ~The little love bug isn’t the prettiest dog, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have beauty in his heart, which is the place that counts.

Harry’s Story

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

HarryHarry is a 9 month old Doodle. He spent 4 weeks in a shelter in North Georgia. For 4 weeks he lay in a pen with no care. It was his lucky day when a wonderful lady that was looking for a Labradoodle went to check him out.

Harry

Harry at rescue

What she saw should be on every news show in The USA. He could hardly walk as he was so thin that his ribs showed even through the mats that were infected and oozing. There was an odor worse than death. He walked with his head cocked to one side. He tried to look at the angel of mercy but he was just in too much pain. His little tail did move and he did lick her fingers just to let her know he appreciated that she would consider him. Well…. She did!

She put Harry in the car with the windows down. It was late by then so she made him comfortable for the night. In the morning our rescue group Angels Among Us Pet Rescue arranged a day spa. The groomers shaved him and what they found was the very worst of mankind! He had a huge abscess on and in his ear and he was so matted that his hair had grown into his anus. We had wondered why he could not sit. He was in too much pain to stand any grooming, so he was rushed to the vet.

Harry

This poor living creature had infections everywhere. His anal glands were so infected and his ear so bad that even when sedated he screamed in agony. He had to have general anesthesia to finish shaving him completely down. The vet said 2 more days and he would have died an agonizing death. Not an assisted one from the shelter where it would have at least been quick.

Harry

Now comes the save part! He was sent home with many, many drugs and will need to return for more surgery when he has gained some weight. He is trying so hard to walk and wag his tail. It will be awhile before the poor baby can sit. He is so grateful to have been given a second chance and is now happy in his forever home. By now half of you have stopped reading because it is just too sad…

The other half we hope will give up an extra coffee or lunch out and send money to help our rescue group give dogs like Harry a healthy, long life.
