Annabelle

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Angels Among Us received an email last week from a concerned woman about a purebred Husky in Alabama who has been severely neglected and can barely walk:

“She is an irresponsible pet owner. She always has many dogs and cats who just walk around outside her trailer and are not allowed inside. She does not have a fence and ties some of the dogs to trees in the front yard. The trailer is only about 40 feet from a busy rural road and the animals are constantly getting run over and killed. I go to her house once a month to pick up my grandson for visitation and I see this situation. I first saw Anabelle last year after Christmas. She was a Christmas gift for her teenage daughter. Anabelle was a beautiful 6 week old purebred husky puppy with red/white markings and ice blue eyes. When I visited the home again 2 or 3 months later I noticed the pup was limping. They said that they had accidentally run her over with their car in the driveway when she didn’t move in time. Over the next few months I saw her limp getting worse and when I asked if they had taken her to the vet, they said no that it wasn’t necessary and that it was resolving on its own. In September when I was there I was shocked at Anabelle’s appearance: she could hardly walk, was very skinny, her eyes were matted with green gunk, her skin had open sores and old scabs on it and she was listless. I asked them please if I could have her and take her to the vet. They said no that they were trying to breed her with their big male husky. I cried all the way home. You can imagine my surprise and elation when she texted me on November 10th, the day before my monthly visit, and said if I still wanted “that broke-down dog” I could have it for $150. On Friday the 11th I drove the 4 hours from my house stopping in Birmingham to buy the biggest crate that would fit in the back of my car. She slept the whole way home. I took her directly to my vet here in Montgomery. They gave her a bath, capstar, all vaccinations, hw test and fecal. Fecal and hw are negative, she has a sweet friendly disposition, and, other than needing to put on weight, is healthy. However, her two front paws have old fractures in them and are in bad shape. The left one she never puts down and it has atrophied. The right one has been x-rayed and examined by their orthopedic specialist and she says it can be saved with surgery. The bad news is that she expects the amputation and orthopedic surgery to run approximately 3,000 dollars. Of course she would need to be spayed also. I am happy to be able to contribute another $500 dollars immediately towards her continuing care in addition to the bill for her boarding, shots, x-rays, etc. up to this point, but I simply cannot afford another $3000 dollars. I still believe I did the right thing by taking her out of that horrible situation but I don’t know what else to do now. I have contributed and helped to save other dogs through your organization and it has been very rewarding. I suppose I have been inspired by your efforts and my attempt to rescue Anabelle was the result of having my eyes opened by your pleas and those of other organizations.

She is still there in boarding right now. She loved her bath and mani-pedi the other day! The groomer said that she just was so happy to be getting attention and was very affectionate and leaning in to her to be petted. She sits at the front of the kennel run and whines for someone to pet her the rest of her day. After the Thanksgiving holiday I will get her out and bring her home until I am able to find another situation for her. I am in Montgomery, about two hours west of Atlanta. I would be happy to bring her wherever I need to and of course donate her crate as well, if you agree to accept her into your program. I believe God has another purpose for Anabelle and I was brought there to help her fulfill it. Thank you for your time and attention.”

How can we NOT help this sweet girl?? We see all kinds of horrors in rescue, but the one thing that continues to surprise us daily is the unconditional love and forgiveness these dogs show despite the cruelty and neglect shown to them. This kind soul has done the hard work, let’s do the easy part and raise the money to help Annabelle have the kind of life she deserves.

Fiona

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Fiona is a WONDERFUL cat that came to Angel’s when her one of her family members developed allergies.  It was very sad for little Fiona, but we found her the perfect new home with a woman who loved her very much!!  Recently we received a very sad call from Fiona’s new owner; she had just found out that she had cancer and only a few months to live.  Her main concern with passing is that she wants her beloved Fiona to find a new home where she will be loved and well cared for.  Below is what she has to say about Fiona:

I have to adopt out Fiona because I have end stage pancreatic and kidney cancer.  Otherwise I would never give her up!   She is joy in the purest form.   Being a cat owner all my life, Fiona takes the prize for being the sweetest and most loving of any cat I have ever had the pleasure of owning.  Although shy at first, when she bonds with you, it will be for life.
Fiona loves for you to talk to her (she knows her name) and she will reward you by “talking” back to you in her sweet, little voice.  She purrs.  She absolutely loves being picked up and held on her back like a baby.  I can’t emphasize this enough.  She even likes to have her belly rubbed.  She follows you around the house like a puppy.   She loves attention.

She likes looking out the window.  She loves playing with her laser mouse.  She adores cat nip.  She has an ugly mouse named Ernie that she is particularly fond of.  She likes drinking water from the sink.  Fiona loves to sleep in bed with you and will even come under the covers with you, if invited.

She never scratches you or bites you.  Fiona does not scratch my furniture.  She is amazingly easy to cut her nails.

Because Fiona has such a beautiful coat, it must be brushed DAILY throughout the year even in winter.  She has been trained to come when you say “Brushings” and she purrs while she gets brushed.  You have to play a game with her to keep at it and get all the hair you feel you should get for the day.  It only takes minutes a day, makes Fiona look and feel great.
Despite every brand of litter under the sun being tried, the only litter Fiona will use is Dr. Elsey’s Natural Cat Attract Litter.   This litter is cost effective as well since you don’t dump the box but simply keep adding to it.  Dr. Elsey also puts in a coupon for his litter as well as a coupon for the cat food that Fiona eats which is Royal Canin Indoor Beauty 35.  Please don’t try Fiona on any other kind of litter.  You will just set her up for failure. Fiona has a favorite treat.  They are Friskies Natural Sensations Real Salmon Flavor.  We call them Goodies.

Fiona is a special, rare breed of gentleness and sweetness in a cat that I haven’t seen in a very long time.  She needs an owner to match her personality and one that will care for her every need in return for unconditional love for the rest of her life.  Since I can no longer take care of her, I pray this owner come forward and stand in my place.

We are very sad that Fiona will lose the love of her owner, but we have vowed to help her find a home where she will be loved just as much.  We believe that Fiona would do best in a quiet home, one without small children.  If you are interested in adopting this amazing cat into your home to be part of your family, please contact Deborah Smith at (404) 414-1282 or deb@angelsrescue.org.

Gentle Ben

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Originally named Spike, this dog spent the first 6 months of his life tied to a tree outside and beaten with a stick. At about 6-9 months old he ran away from that home. My son Ben found him about a month later after he had been hit by a car. The original owner wanted to put him down then and gave up their rights to him. Ben was working at a vet clinic at the time, so he took on the responsibility for this dog and made sure he got the surgery he needed.
When Spike came to my house, he was a very wild and scary dog. My sister put us in touch with her friend Lisa that stepped in to help us with him. She suggested the first thing she recommended was to change his name, we could not think of one so she named him GENTLE BEN. What an amazing thing a name change will do for a dog. Lisa took Gentle Ben to her house for approximately two years. She worked with him to undo his bad and scary habits, how to behave wih manners and walk on a leash. She also taught us how to work with him. Every time (my son) Ben came around Lisa would point out how Gentle Ben looked at (my son) Ben with such loving eyes and treated him like he could walk on water. The relationship between Ben and dog was a gift to behold.
Gentle Ben lived with Ben for the rest of his life. He was a very gentle, loviing and fun dog to behold. He got along with others dogs he lived with, even my Chihuahuas.
Gentle Ben’s life shows how it took many loving and caring people to give him the life he deserved.
Gentle Ben lived till he was about 10 1/2 years old. He was loved by all of us.

Jessie Belle

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Jessie Belle was picked by Clayton County AC, roaming the streets as a stray. Skinny and scared this poor baby is only about 4-5 months old. Jessie Belle also has a broken hip, mostly likely due to trauma such as being struck by a car or a tremendous kick with a heavy boot. :-( So much heartbreak to happen in this young girl’s life. However, things are looking up for Jessie Belle, because she has been rescued by Angels Among Us Pet Rescue. Now all she wants is to jump around and play with her 4 legged foster sisters. Jessie Belle dreams of running with her 5 year old human foster sister in the yard, and jump on the couch to give lots of sweet puppy kisses. But Jessie Belle cannot do these things unless she has expensive hip surgery. Will you please donate to Jessie Belle, so she can salvage what is left of her puppyhood? The doctors say she needs the surgery ASAP. You see, due to the broken hip, she is not using her back leg, and the muscles have atrophied. She will need lots of physical therapy after the surgery, but she will make a full recovery.

Please help her!

It will be one year tomorrow (Nov 8, 2011) since we said good-bye to our sweet Shelby. She was a special rescue that became a part of our family when she was 18 months old. Shelby gave us 14 years of unconditional love as our “furry child”. The inscription on her urn says it best — “You are loved now and forever and have left your paw prints on our hearts.”

Squeaks

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

This darling came into my life 19 years ago. At the time we were newly weds and the people we were renting from had a litter of pups for give away. That is when this wonderful creature came into my life. I am not even sure what he really is I just tell everyone he had soon be one than the other he is my squeaks. No smarter dog have I ever know, he has had two toddlers petting and bouncing on him raised a kitten that someone dropped off at our house, to wrangling snakes away from our children. Not to mention having helped with a couple of dauchshunds. Run free baby Mom will see you again you are gone from sight but now from our life’s by any means your love is all around us. Rest in Peace Darling, thank you for 19 years of nothing but loyalty and love.

Edna

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Edna was one of my AAU fosters. She came to me with a disease called leptospirosis. Edna was an old soul with a heart of gold. Although she was only with us a short time, we became quickly attached and loved her until the end. She fought a hard battle. There is still a void left in my heart. I know that one day, I will see her at the Rainbow Bridge with her beautiful smile. Run free sweet girl! We love you and miss you.
